DOWNINGTOWN, PA — Hundreds of Chester County families filled United Sports in Downingtown on Monday, October 27, for the annual Chester County College Fair — a one-stop event designed to simplify the college search process for students and their parents.
Organized by the Chester County Intermediate Unit (CCIU) and sponsored by CCRES Educational and Behavioral Health Services, the fair brought together representatives from more than 160 colleges, universities, trade schools, military programs, and specialized education pathways. The event was powered by StriveScan, which allowed students to share information instantly with schools without filling out paper forms.
“The Chester County College Fair brings everything families need right to their doorstep,” said Jay Della Ragione, special events coordinator for the CCIU. “Instead of spending months visiting different campuses, parents and students can explore dozens of options in one evening right here in Downingtown. I’ve seen families walk in feeling overwhelmed and leave with real clarity about their next steps.”
The fair’s goal is to give students a chance to explore their postsecondary options and make meaningful connections with admissions counselors. “It gets students excited about the potential of seeing themselves in college,” said Brandon Rodriquez Torrento, a representative from John Carroll University. “It’s a great opportunity to ask questions and start planning for what comes after graduation.”
A key feature of this year’s event was the Transitioning Beyond High School early hour session — a dedicated time for students with disabilities and their families to meet directly with representatives from inclusive higher education programs.
“The early hour provided a calm, focused environment where students with disabilities could have meaningful conversations without the crowds,” said Meaghan Stolnis, training and consultation specialist for the CCIU. “It gave families access to experts who understand inclusive higher education and could talk through supports, accommodations, and individualized pathways.”
For many families, the event provided clarity and confidence about the next step in their child’s journey. High school student Maura McCann described it as “a big learning experience,” saying that each conversation helped her understand what to expect from campus life. Her father, John McCann, said the fair gave parents a chance to step back and let their children take the lead in exploring their futures.
By the end of the evening, attendees left with new contacts, fresh insights, and a stronger sense of direction — whether their plans involve college, career training, or specialized education.
The Chester County College Fair, organized annually by the CCIU, continues to serve as a cornerstone event for local students preparing for life beyond high school, reflecting the county’s ongoing commitment to educational opportunity and student success.
