WEST GROVE, PA — The Chester County Intermediate Unit (CCIU) has officially opened the doors of its revitalized Engle Education Center, welcoming 233 students on Monday, August 25. The facility marks a major investment in educational services for children across southern Chester County, particularly those requiring specialized support.

The center, located in the former Fred S. Engle Middle School, offers a range of programs including K–12 special education services such as autistic support, emotional support, life skills training, and multiple disabilities support. It also houses preschool special education programs for children ages three to five, as well as Head Start and Early Head Start, expanding access to early learning and family support resources within the community.

The redesign places emphasis on inclusivity and accessibility, with features intended to meet the diverse needs of students. “This building means so much to our students,” said Dr. Shannon Brown, principal of the Child and Career Development Center (CCDC) Engle location. “Its thoughtful and inclusive design was created with our learners at the heart.”

Ahead of the school year, families attended a community Ice Cream Social to preview the building, underscoring local enthusiasm for the center’s opening. Tamara Acuna, assistant director of student services at CCIU, highlighted the positive response from the youngest learners, noting the impact of natural light, wide windows, and a new playground. “Helping families reach their goals — that’s what motivates us every day,” she said.

The project was made possible through collaboration with the Avon Grove School District, which has relocated its administrative offices to the site, and with community support. Nonprofit partner CCRES contributed more than $180,000 toward the construction of the playground, ensuring accessibility for all students.
