DEVON, PA — Easttown Township is offering residents a safe alternative to tossing old holiday lights in the trash or mistakenly dropping them into curbside recycling bins.
Township officials announced that residents can recycle unwanted string lights by dropping them off at the Easttown Township Municipal Building, 566 Beaumont Road, through January 12. A collection bin has been placed outside the main entrance and is accessible during that period.
Only string lights are accepted. Officials stressed that spools, reels, and other materials should not be placed in the bin.
The township said holiday light strands are not permitted in curbside recycling because their wires can become tangled in sorting equipment at recycling facilities. Those tangles can force machinery shutdowns and create serious safety hazards for workers.
By diverting string lights from household recycling bins, officials said the program helps protect recycling operations while giving residents a responsible way to dispose of worn or broken decorations after the holiday season.
Residents are encouraged to take advantage of the drop-off option before the January 12 deadline.
