KENNETT SQUARE, PA — Square Roots Collective will open Opus, a new restaurant at 201 Birch Street, on Sept. 11, extending its redevelopment of Kennett Square’s Birch Street corridor with a hospitality business that plans to direct all profits toward community impact.
The restaurant will serve New American cuisine and cocktails, with Executive Chef Matt Anderson leading the kitchen and Beau Fournier serving as general manager. A ribbon-cutting and community open house is scheduled for Sept. 10 from 4 to 6 p.m., a day before the public opening.
Opus joins The Creamery of Kennett Square, Artelo Hotel and The Francis Hotel & Suites among Square Roots Collective’s hospitality businesses. The organization says profits from those operations support community initiatives and that Opus will follow the same model.
Like Square Roots Collective’s other hospitality businesses — The Creamery of Kennett Square, Artelo Hotel and The Francis Hotel & Suites — Opus will direct all of its profits toward community impact, including work by partners such as Family Promise, the Garage Community & Youth Center and Brandywine Red Clay Alliance.
“Just like the other Square Roots Collective hospitality businesses, all profits from Opus will go to enable positive impact in the community,” co-Chief Executive Officer Stephanie Almanza said. “We believe that business can be a source of social good.”
The opening also adds another restored property to the organization’s presence along Birch Street. The building at 201 Birch Street underwent renovation for the restaurant, which combines dining space with paintings, sculpture and commissioned artwork.
“For the past ten years, we have loved hosting the community at The Creamery of Kennett Square as a casual, family-friendly option,” Almanza said. “Now, we’re looking forward to adding Opus as a new elevated dining restaurant in our town.”
The art program will extend to the building’s exterior this fall, when Philadelphia-based artist Phillip Adams is expected to install a mural on its main outside wall. Community members will participate in painting the work, which is intended to reference Birch Street’s industrial history.
Inside, the restaurant will feature a ceiling mural along with paintings by local artists and sculpture, according to Fournier.
“From the moment you enter the building, you’ll be surrounded by art that’s really unique,” Fournier said. He added that the restaurant’s broader objective is to create a setting where customers can connect over food and drinks.
The project expands a hospitality district Square Roots Collective has developed in Kennett Square through properties including The Creamery, Artelo and The Francis. Opus adds a full-service restaurant to that portfolio while tying its financial performance to the organization’s community-focused model.
