WASHINGTON, D.C. — The U.S. Postal Service plans temporary holiday surcharges on Priority Mail, Priority Mail Express, Ground Advantage and Parcel Select shipments beginning Oct. 4, raising package costs for consumers and commercial shippers during the peak season to offset higher handling expenses.
The temporary rates, approved by the Postal Service’s governors and filed with the Postal Regulatory Commission, would remain in effect through Jan. 17, 2027, pending favorable regulatory review.
No other USPS products or services would be affected.
For retail customers, the increases vary by package weight, service and shipping zone. Priority Mail and Ground Advantage shipments traveling within Zones 1 through 4 would rise by 50 cents for packages weighing up to 3 pounds, 80 cents for packages weighing 4 to 10 pounds, $1.25 for those weighing 11 to 25 pounds and $3.90 for heavier or oversized parcels.
Longer-distance Priority Mail shipments in Zones 5 through 9 would face larger increases, ranging from $1 for packages weighing up to 3 pounds to $9.10 for packages weighing 26 to 70 pounds.
Retail Ground Advantage shipments in Zones 5 through 9 would increase by 75 cents to $7.50 depending on weight.
Priority Mail Express would carry the largest seasonal additions. Retail increases would range from $1.40 for lighter shipments traveling shorter distances to $20.80 for packages weighing 26 to 70 pounds moving through Zones 5 through 9.
Priority Mail Large Flat Rate Boxes would increase by $2.10 at retail, while other Priority Mail flat-rate products would rise by $1. Priority Mail Express Flat Rate Envelopes would increase by $2.35.
Commercial customers would also face temporary increases, though many are smaller than the corresponding retail adjustments.
Commercial Priority Mail and Ground Advantage shipments within Zones 1 through 4 would rise by 40 cents to $3.15 depending on weight. Longer-distance Priority Mail increases would range from 85 cents to $9.10.
Commercial Ground Advantage shipments in Zones 5 through 9 would increase by 55 cents to $7.70, while Priority Mail Express increases would range from $1.40 to $18.20.
Parcel Select commercial rates would rise by 40 cents for packages weighing up to 3 pounds, 50 cents for 4- to 10-pound shipments, 80 cents for packages weighing 11 to 25 pounds and $2.35 for shipments weighing 26 to 70 pounds or classified as oversized.
The Postal Service described the changes as a seasonal adjustment intended to cover additional handling costs associated with holiday shipping volume and align its pricing with practices used by competing parcel carriers.
USPS also tied the increases to its broader effort to operate its nationwide delivery network on a financially sustainable basis.
