PHILADELPHIA, PA — Drivers in Northeast Philadelphia should prepare for a major traffic change Friday night, August 21, when the Bridge Street ramp to northbound I-95 closes permanently and northbound interstate traffic shifts onto newly reconstructed southbound lanes.

Beginning at 8:00 PM Friday, the Bridge Street ramp to northbound I-95 will close permanently ahead of construction of a new northbound on-ramp from Tacony Street and the Delaware Avenue extension. PennDOT expects the new ramp to open in late 2027.
During the long-term closure, drivers will be directed to use Tacony Street and State Road/New State Road to reach the northbound I-95 on-ramp at Milnor Street.
Motorists should plan extra time along the detour route because backups and delays are expected. Drivers who regularly use the Bridge Street entrance should become familiar with the alternate route before the permanent closure begins.
A separate overnight traffic shift will take place from 8:00 PM Friday until 5:00 AM Saturday. Northbound I-95 traffic will be moved onto the newly reconstructed southbound lanes while crews begin reconstructing the northbound side of the interstate at the Bridge Street Interchange.
The changes are part of PennDOT’s $267.9 million I-95 Section BS2 project, which includes reconstruction of the viaduct over Bridge and Tacony streets and adjacent sections of the interstate, along with interchange and surface-street improvements.
The northbound reconstruction marks the final phase of the project. PennDOT expects overall construction to be completed in spring 2028.
If weather forces Friday night’s operations to be canceled, PennDOT plans to reschedule the work for Monday, August 24, from 8:00 PM until 5:00 AM the following morning.
