PHILADELPHIA, PA — A growing concern about economic mobility is bringing some of the region’s most influential voices together for a high-impact conversation on the future of opportunity in Greater Philadelphia.
United Way of Greater Philadelphia and Southern New Jersey will host its fifth annual OpportUNITY Summit, inviting hundreds of leaders, advocates, and changemakers to tackle the challenges facing working families—and explore solutions at a pivotal moment ahead of the nation’s 250th anniversary.
Set for Wednesday, May 20, the half-day event at The Bellevue Hotel will center on the theme “United in Purpose: Renewing the Promise of America,” with a focus on breaking down systemic barriers and expanding pathways to prosperity across the region.
“Creating lasting change requires bold ideas and collective commitment,” said Bill Golderer, president and CEO of UWGPSNJ. “This is a defining moment to reflect on our shared values and take action to ensure opportunity is accessible for every person in our region.”
Big Ideas, National Voices
This year’s Summit brings together a lineup of nationally recognized speakers who will examine economic inequality from multiple angles.
Cullum Clark, a fellow at the Bush Institute–SMU Economic Growth Initiative, will explore how poverty is measured—and why current methods may fail to capture the full picture, shaping policy and funding decisions in ways that miss those most in need.
Andre M. Perry of the Brookings Institution will focus on closing racial economic gaps, drawing on research and insights from his work on structural inequality and investment strategies that can drive meaningful change.
Closing the program, Dr. Laurie Santos of Yale University will deliver the keynote, offering science-backed perspectives on well-being, resilience, and how communities can build more fulfilling lives.
The event will be emceed by Tiffany Bacon of WURD Radio, adding a strong local voice to the day’s conversations.
A Moment That Matters for the Region
Organizers say the Summit comes at a critical time, as recent data shows nearly two-thirds of community leaders believe conditions for economic mobility have worsened over the past year—and many expect further decline.
By bringing together leaders from across sectors, the Summit aims to spark collaboration and actionable ideas that can drive lasting impact throughout Greater Philadelphia and Southern New Jersey.
Support for the event includes regional partners such as WSFS Bank and PECO, with additional speakers expected to be announced.
