Driver Killed After SUV Crosses Median in Three-Vehicle Crash

NEWARK, DE — Delaware State Police are investigating a fatal three-vehicle crash that occurred Wednesday evening, leaving one man dead and another critically injured, authorities said.

According to Delaware State Police, the crash occurred at approximately 6:50 p.m. April 1, 2026, on South College Avenue (Route 896) north of the intersection with Old Baltimore Pike.

Investigators said a Jeep Grand Cherokee traveling northbound allegedly crossed the center median for reasons still under investigation and struck a southbound Chevrolet Silverado. Police reported a Subaru Ascent traveling in the same direction was also struck during the collision.

Authorities said the driver of the Jeep, a 45-year-old Newark man, was transported to a nearby hospital, where he later died. Police said his identity is being withheld pending notification of family.

According to investigators, the driver of the Chevrolet, a 42-year-old Newark man, was transported to a hospital with critical injuries.

Police reported the driver of the Subaru, a 42-year-old man from Middletown, was not injured.

Authorities said the roadway was closed for approximately five hours while the crash was investigated and cleared.
