WEST CHESTER, PA — As emergency calls continue to demand fast decisions and steady voices, the West Chester Borough Police Department is seeking part-time communications officers to staff its dispatch center, placing recruits on the front lines of public safety where seconds can matter most.
The department announced it is accepting applications for part-time Communications Officer/Police Dispatcher positions, a role responsible for handling emergency and non-emergency calls, dispatching officers, and serving as a critical link between the public and police operations. The positions are supervised by the Chief Communications Officer and embedded directly within the police department.
Dispatchers are tasked with interviewing callers under pressure, documenting police activity, monitoring radio traffic and video systems, and managing CLEAN and NCIC checks in coordination with the Pennsylvania State Police. The role also includes monitoring the police department lobby, assisting residents in person, and directing the public to appropriate borough departments when needed.
Police officials emphasized that the position requires strong judgment, the ability to multitask, and comfort working in high-stress situations. Dispatchers must be able to react quickly to unfolding events, process information accurately, and maintain professionalism when dealing with distressed callers.
The job is part-time and may involve overnight shifts, weekends, and 12-hour tours, with additional hours possible to cover staffing gaps. Working conditions include prolonged periods seated at a radio console in a darkened operations room filled with monitors, computers, and communications equipment.
Applicants must have a high school diploma or GED and hold a valid driver’s license. Prior emergency dispatching experience and APCO certification are preferred but not required. Candidates must pass pre-employment drug screening, criminal background and credit checks, and agree to document review by the borough and its agents.
The position pays $22.00 per hour and will remain open until filled.
Interested candidates are asked to submit a cover letter and resume via email to Chief Communications Officer Joseph Miles at JMiles@west-chester.com.
The opening reflects ongoing staffing needs in emergency communications, a field that has grown increasingly critical as call volumes rise and public expectations for rapid response continue to intensify.
