MALVERN, PA — Vishay Intertechnology, Inc. (NYSE: VSH) said its SGTPL-28 series of low-profile, space-grade planar transformers has been named a 2025 AspenCore EE Awards Asia winner, highlighting growing demand for smaller, lighter, and more cost-efficient power solutions in aerospace and defense systems.
The 150 W SGTPL-28 series captured top honors in the Discrete Product category, becoming the most-voted product in its class. The devices are the industry’s first planar transformers optimized for 28 V input forward converters that meet stringent aerospace and defense standards, including MIL-PRF-27 level T, INST-EEE-002, and MIL-STD-981.
AspenCore’s EE Awards Asia recognize products and companies shaping Asia’s electronics industry, with winners selected by a panel of senior industry analysts and votes from engineers and readers worldwide. Vishay said the award reflects the SGTPL-28 series’ ability to deliver higher power density and smaller size at lower cost than traditional planar transformer designs.
Designed for harsh operating environments, the transformers feature over-molded windings and support operating temperatures up to 130 degrees Celsius. They are qualified to withstand repeated thermal shock cycles, along with high levels of mechanical shock and vibration, and are offered with six screening options to meet mission-specific reliability requirements.
Beyond 28 V forward converters, the SGTPL-28 devices are used in high-reliability switch-mode power supplies and active clamp or dual-switch forward converter designs. Multiple secondary windings allow a single transformer to power multiple output channels, supporting configurations such as two 12 V rails or four 5 V rails in compact systems.
Vishay said the series delivers up to 40 percent greater winding fill compared with conventional planar transformers, enabling a smaller footprint while improving efficiency and power density. The internal winding architecture also allows customization without non-recurring engineering charges, helping designers tailor solutions while managing cost and lead times.
The award was presented December 5 at a ceremony in Taipei, where Gary Liu, senior sales manager for Vishay Asia, accepted the honor on behalf of the company.
The recognition reinforces Vishay’s position in space and defense power electronics, as system designers push for higher performance in tighter envelopes without compromising reliability.
