PHILADELPHIA, PA — Drivers should brace for major overnight disruptions next week as PennDOT plans lane restrictions and full closures on westbound Interstate 76 (Schuylkill Expressway) near 30th Street for bridge construction.
At a Glance
- Roads Affected: I-76 West (Schuylkill Expressway) between 30th Street and I-676
- Dates: Monday, April 6 – Friday, April 10
- Times: 9:00 PM – 5:00 AM (lane reduction 9–10 PM; full closure 10 PM–5 AM)
- Reason: Market Street bridge construction and rehabilitation
PennDOT said westbound I-76 will be reduced to one lane from 9:00 PM to 10:00 PM, followed by a full closure from 10:00 PM through 5:00 AM each night.
During the closure, drivers will be directed to exit at 30th Street and travel west on Schuylkill Avenue to access ramps reconnecting to I-76 West (Schuylkill Expressway) and I-676 East. Expect heavy delays along Schuylkill Avenue and surrounding streets as traffic is diverted through the detour.
Motorists should plan extra time, expect significant backups, and consider alternate routes to avoid congestion in the Center City and University City areas.
The work is part of a $148.9 million project to rehabilitate multiple Market Street bridge structures spanning I-76, Amtrak lines, the Schuylkill River Trail, and the CSX Railroad. Improvements include bridge reconstruction, roadway reconfiguration, new bicycle lanes, upgraded signals, and enhanced lighting.
All work is weather dependent and may be rescheduled if necessary.
