Two Pennsylvania State Troopers Shot in Ambush; Gunman Killed in Standoff Near Route 171

GIBSON, PA — Two Pennsylvania State Troopers were seriously injured Thursday morning during an exchange of gunfire with an armed suspect in rural Susquehanna County. Authorities confirm that the suspect was fatally shot after refusing to surrender.

The incident occurred on August 7, 2025, at approximately 11:17 a.m. when troopers responded to a call near State Route 171 in Thompson Township. Upon arrival, the male suspect allegedly opened fire on the troopers, striking both.

Trooper Joseph Perechinsky and Trooper William Jenkins sustained serious injuries and were airlifted from the scene for emergency medical care. As of this writing, both are hospitalized and reported to be in stable condition.

According to the Pennsylvania State Police, the suspect was armed with a rifle and refused repeated commands to disarm. A coordinated response involving state and local law enforcement established a secure perimeter, and the suspect was ultimately shot and killed during the ensuing confrontation.

Authorities have confirmed that there is no ongoing threat to the public. The identity of the suspect has not been released.

The investigation remains active, and additional details are expected to be released in the coming days.
