WYOMISSING, PA & JOLIET, IL — PENN Entertainment, Inc. (NASDAQ: PENN) announced it will close its Hollywood Casino Joliet riverboat operation at 5:59 a.m. CDT on July 29 as it prepares to unveil a new $185 million land-based casino on August 11, pending regulatory approvals.
The riverboat casino, which has served guests for over three decades, will make way for a modern, state-of-the-art facility located within the Rock Run Collection—a mixed-use development at the I-80 and I-55 interchange southwest of Chicago. The move marks a significant investment in the region and a strategic shift in PENN’s long-term gaming and entertainment strategy.
“As we transition to our new state-of-the-art facility, we reflect on 30+ years of operating in Joliet,” said Jay Snowden, CEO and President of PENN Entertainment. “We look forward to continuing to create best-in-class experiences for our loyal customers, welcoming new guests, and supporting this community for years to come.”
The new Hollywood Casino Joliet will feature approximately 1,000 slot machines and 43 table games, including high-limit options, a baccarat room, and an ESPN BET-branded sportsbook. Culinary offerings will be a highlight of the new venue, including Sorellina by celebrity chef Giada De Laurentiis, as well as the Boulevard Food & Drink Hall. The latter will showcase local brands like Antique Taco, Pretty Cool Ice Cream, and a new burger concept, Lucky Goat, from award-winning chef Stephanie Izard.
Additional amenities include a 10,000-square-foot all-ages event center, flexible meeting spaces, and 1,330 on-site parking spaces. The entertainment complex is designed to serve as a regional destination for gaming, dining, and events.
“We are incredibly excited about our future at the new location, which enhances our ability to serve guests and creates a top entertainment, gaming and dining attraction in the region,” said Todd George, Executive Vice President of Operations for PENN Entertainment.
Until its closure, the riverboat casino will operate on normal hours, while the adjacent hotel will accept guests through July 26. PENN is encouraging patrons to visit its nearby properties—Hollywood Casino Aurora and Ameristar East Chicago—during the brief transition period.
“We thank all of our guests, loyalty members and team members that have made our riverboat location special over the last 30 years and invite them to visit the riverboat one last time before July 29,” said Ruben Warren, Vice President and General Manager of Hollywood Casino Joliet.
Guests will be able to redeem any unused riverboat casino chips at the new Joliet location until December 31, 2025. A new website for the property is expected to go live on July 29, offering updates on dining reservations, event schedules, and ticket details for an exclusive dining event with Giada De Laurentiis later in August.
