PHILADELPHIA, PA — The Philadelphia Zoo has announced the grand opening of Flamingo Cove, a dynamic outdoor walkthrough aviary that celebrates the beauty and vibrancy of two flamingo species. Opening to the public on Saturday, June 14, this new habitat offers visitors a unique opportunity to connect with one of the Zoo’s most iconic animals.

Located beside the McNeil Avian Center, Flamingo Cove features a three-foot deep wading pool, dedicated nesting islands, and lush vegetation to support the well-being of its 24 flamingos. The habitat combines 10 Caribbean flamingos, known for their bright pink hue, with 14 African greater flamingos, a species returning to the Zoo for the first time in nearly 50 years.

“We’re thrilled to offer our guests a new opportunity to get up close to see and hear why a group of flamingos is called a flamboyance!” said President and CEO, Dr. Jo-Elle Mogerman. “Experiences like these inspire support for wildlife and create lasting memories.”

Flamingo Cove also reflects the Zoo’s commitment to sustainability, repurposing its original 1927 aviary while elevating care standards for its bird inhabitants. Nearby, visitors can enjoy themed refreshments and flamingo-inspired merchandise during June to celebrate the attraction’s opening.

Vice President of Animal Well-Being Rachel Metz emphasized the Zoo’s dedication to advancing animal care. “This new habitat allows us to enhance the lives of these flamingos and provides our guests with an incredible way to meet and learn about them. It’s the perfect fusion of education and conservation.”

The exhibit’s unveiling coincides with construction efforts for Francis J. Carey Bear Country, a $20 million project expanding the Zoo’s bear habitats and its Zoo360 trail system. Lead support for this significant renovation has been pledged by philanthropic organizations, including the W. P. Carey Foundation and the William Penn Foundation, further investing in the Zoo’s mission to educate and inspire.
