WASHINGTON, D.C. — The Internal Revenue Service has issued a reminder to U.S. citizens and resident aliens abroad to file their 2024 federal income tax returns and pay any tax due by Monday, June 16, 2025. This deadline, extended from the standard April 15 date, applies to individuals living overseas or serving in the military outside the United States and Puerto Rico.
Taxpayers qualify for this automatic two-month extension if their primary residence or post of duty is outside the U.S. and Puerto Rico. To claim the extension, individuals must attach a statement to their return explaining their eligibility.
For those unable to meet the June 16 deadline, an automatic extension until October 15, 2025, can be requested. However, the IRS cautions that “an extension of time to file is not an extension to pay,” and interest will accrue on payments made after April 15.
The IRS also outlined multiple payment methods, including IRS Direct Pay, the Electronic Federal Tax Payment System, and payments via debit or credit cards, as well as digital wallets. Taxpayers without a U.S. bank account can make transfers using the IRS’s foreign electronic payment options.
Taxpayers abroad must ensure compliance with additional reporting obligations, such as filing FinCEN Form 114 (FBAR) for foreign financial accounts exceeding $10,000 in aggregate value and reporting specified foreign assets on IRS Form 8938, if applicable. The IRS also requires reporting all income, including foreign income, and paying taxes in U.S. dollars using the exchange rate as of December 31.
The IRS encourages all taxpayers abroad to explore potential benefits such as the foreign earned income exclusion and Foreign Tax Credit, which may reduce their tax liability.
With the June 16 deadline fast approaching, the IRS reminds taxpayers to act promptly to avoid penalties and ensure compliance with U.S. tax laws.
