BERWYN, PA — More than 400 pickleball players from across the country will travel to Berwyn between August 25 – 29 for the Association of Pickleball Professionals (APP) tour, held at the Upper Main Line YMCA.

The YMCA was selected to host the Philadelphia-region stop of the tour, which has 32 tournaments scheduled throughout the world.

“We’re honored to host the APP tournament at our racquet sports complex at the Upper Main Line YMCA. We host a variety of smaller tournaments and offer pickleball leagues and leveled play at locations across Chester County and are excited to see the level of play at this prestigious tournament,” shares Tim Irwin, director of pickleball for the Upper Main Line YMCA.

The APP tournament offers more than $2 million in prize money for professional athletes and also offers a variety of amateur play. Individuals can register to play, volunteer or simply come to the tournament to watch.

The tournament is seeking volunteers to help with court set-up and monitoring, parking and traffic, check-in and more. Volunteers receive complimentary passes to the tournament. Individuals interested in volunteering should visit https://www.pickleballdesk.com/signup/318.

“Pickleball is exploding in popularity and we’re seeing increased interest across our association. It is a sport that is quick to learn and accessible to a wide variety of ages and levels,” shares Jackie Canan, who oversees the pickleball program for the YMCA of Greater Brandywine.

Pickleball is a sport that combines elements of badminton, table tennis and tennis. Individuals interested in learning more can participate in an Introduction to Pickleball class at the YMCA. The class is free for members of the organization, which boasts more than 40 indoor and outdoor courts across the county and has recently added social events and youth offerings.
