PARKESBURG, PA — The Parkesburg Borough Police Department has released the following public service announcement related to hazardous winter driving conditions:
“As approaching winter months create hazardous driving conditions, proper planning and providing sufficient time to travel safely is paramount. Our winter driving skills are a little rusty (we’re all out of practice) and driving on snow or ice for the first couple storms can be tense.
“Plan for changing road conditions and weather delays along your route of travel. Pay close attention to the type of precipitation falling on the road’s surface and the air temperature along your route of travel.
“Remember, the ground holds heat…as well as the cold. Rain falling upon frozen ground, or upon frozen blacktop/concrete, can freeze instantly…causing you to [lose] control of your vehicle. Slow down, leave plenty of space between you and the vehicle you’re following and prepare for longer stopping distances on slippery/snow-covered surfaces.
“Prepare your vehicle for winter driving conditions. Make sure that your battery is in good shape and holds a full charge. Check your tires and make sure they’re designed for traction in [the] snow!
“Even 4-wheel drive vehicles need extra stopping distance and good tires to safely navigate winter driving conditions. Be safe and patient with less skilled drivers sharing the road. We all need to get where we need to be SAFELY!
“Studded tires are permitted November 15th through April 1st.”
