PHILADELPHIA, PA — A massive data breach from March 4 to Dec. 12 exposed Wawa convenience store customer’s credit and debit card information to potential fraudsters. Officials are still investigating whether the breach impacted all Wawa locations.
PenPIRG Education Fund recommends closely monitoring your debit and credit cards for any fraudulent charges if you have been to a Wawa recently. The stolen information may expose customers to phishing or other scams. If your financial institution contacts you, provide no information and call them back using the number on the back of your card. PennPIRG Education Fund Campaign Associate Emma Horst-Martz issued the following statement:
“The Equifax and CapitalOne data breaches may get the big news stories, but today’s discovery of a seven-month-long breach of Wawa customer information should be a reminder to everyone just how much our financial information is exposed. This precious information is clearly not as safe as Americans expect when they shop at stores both big and small every day.
“Until companies take sufficient action to safeguard our financial information, Americans will have to be extremely diligent. Wawa is taking the right initial steps by providing potentially impacted customers with one year of identity theft protection and credit monitoring at no charge, but we need answers about how the malware reached Wawa’s system, and why it took so long to uncover. Otherwise, this is likely to happen again and again.”
