PennDOT announced that construction is scheduled to begin Monday, June 8, on an improvement project to replace or rehabilitate seven poor condition bridges in Bucks, Chester, and Montgomery counties.
“It is critical that we continue to address poor condition bridges throughout the state and in the Philadelphia region.” said District 6 Executive Kenneth M. McClain. “These projects are vital to maintaining safe and efficient crossings for the traveling public.”
Work on this project will be in accordance with Centers for Disease Control and state Department of Health guidance as well as a project-specific COVID-19 safety plan, which will include protocols for social distancing, use of face coverings, personal and job-site cleaning protocols, management of entries to the jobsite, and relevant training.
Beginning Monday, June 8, the bridge carrying West State Road over the west branch of Red Clay Creek will be closed and detoured between North/South Mill Road and Penns Manor Drive in Kennett Township and Kennett Square Borough, Chester County. Work is expected to be completed in late August.
During the closure, West State Road motorists will be detoured over South Mill Road, West Cypress Street, northbound on U.S. 1 (Baltimore Pike), U-turn at Greenwood Road, southbound on U.S. 1 (Kennett Oxford Bypass), Route 41(Avondale) interchange, and Baltimore Pike. Local access will be maintained up to the construction zone.
PennDOT’s contractor will rehabilitate the reinforced concrete T-beam bridge by replacing the bridge superstructure along with guiderail and minor road approach improvements.
Built in 1929, the bridge is 39 feet long and 41 feet wide. The structure carries an average of 5743 vehicles a day.
The other structures in this bridge improvement project include the following:
- Springton Road over Indian Run in Wallace Township, Chester County;
- Creek Road over the Brandywine Creek in East Brandywine Township, Chester County;
- Clay Creek Road over White Clay Creek in Franklin Township, Chester County;
- Baltimore Pike over Red Clay Creek in New Garden Township, Chester County;
- 2nd Avenue over Mingo Creek in Upper Providence Township, Montgomery County; and
- Hulmeville Road over Chubb Run in Middletown Township and Penndel Borough, Bucks County.
Loftus Construction, Inc. of Cinnaminson, New Jersey, is the general contractor on this $5,046,000 bridge improvement project that is financed with 100 percent state funds.
Work on the entire project is expected to be completed in late summer 2022.
