HARRISBURG, PA — The Pennsylvania AFL-CIO issued the following statement regarding the Supreme Court’s decision to overturn Roe v. Wade:

“The action by the Supreme Court to overturn Roe v. Wade reestablishes women as second-class citizens by removing their fundamental right to make decisions regarding their health care, opening a dangerous door to the further deterioration of all Americans’ personal freedom to govern their own bodies.

“This decision is counter to our core democratic ideals and comes during an unsettling period when other long-established rights like American workers’ right to bargain collectively and American citizens’ right to vote are under attack.

“The ripple effect and irony of this decision cannot be overstated, as we continue to fight for paid family leave, wage equality, quality healthcare and benefits, and long-overdue public investments in child care and public education. This decision will have a disproportionately punitive impact on low-income women.

“The fundamental principle of equality has been further marginalized today, and women’s rights and personal safety around the globe are at higher risk.”
