WEST CHESTER, PA — On this International Women’s Day, a global celebration of women’s achievements and an annual call for gender equality, The Fund for Women and Girls has announced the 13th recipient of the esteemed Kitchen Table Award: Daicy Cañas. This award recognizes a woman from Chester County who has significantly improved the lives of women and girls through her service, philanthropy, and dedication.
Daicy Cañas will accept the award at the 19th Annual Making a Difference Luncheon on Friday, May 3, 2024, at The Desmond Hotel in Malvern. This event brings together individuals committed to advancing the cause of women and girls in Chester County.
Daicy, a native of Guanajuato, Mexico, moved to Pennsylvania at the tender age of 10. Her life journey, marked by resilience and compassion, has been fueled by a deep commitment to giving back to her community. After earning a bachelor’s degree in psychology from West Chester University, Daicy felt compelled to support her community, having personally navigated the challenges of settling into a new country.
Motivated by her passion for empowering young women, Daicy joined YoungMoms, a Kennett Square-based organization dedicated to providing support, resources, and skills to pregnant and parenting young women. Over seven years, including four as Program Director, Daicy worked tirelessly to ensure that each young mom received the assistance they needed to overcome obstacles and build a better future for themselves and their families.
Under Daicy’s leadership, YoungMoms became a beacon of hope and opportunity for countless young women in the community. Her dedication and commitment have transformed many lives, inspiring them to pursue their dreams and achieve their goals.
Reflecting on her time at YoungMoms, Daicy shares, “It is very rewarding to see so many of our young moms graduate school, accomplish their goals, and continue to keep in touch with us years after they have graduated from YoungMoms.”
Mary Hewes, Executive Director of YoungMoms and nominator for the award, praised Daicy’s contributions, saying, “Daicy has spent years advocating for those who are living in our community but struggling to have their basic needs met. Her clients, who can be as young as 14, are struggling to navigate the already complicated teen years while being pregnant or parenting a child of their own. She has compassion, cultivates hope for those who may feel hopeless, builds community for those who feel alone and creates wellness for our clients.”
The Kitchen Table Award, established by The Fund for Women and Girls in 2011, celebrates the genesis of The Fund itself in 1996: the many conversations held around kitchen, board, and coffee tables about what could be done to address the needs of local women and girls. The award recognizes individuals who exemplify the spirit of inclusivity and empowerment within their communities.
Daicy’s unwavering dedication to fostering inclusion and empowerment embodies the spirit of the Kitchen Table Award. Her tireless efforts have made a lasting impact on the lives of countless individuals, embodying the ethos of International Women’s Day and the mission of the Fund for Women and Girls.
Please join in congratulating Daicy Cañas for this well-deserved honor and celebrating her remarkable contributions to the community.
