SCRANTON, PA — The Chester County District Attorney’s Office announced that Mikal Johnson, age 25, of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, was sentenced on Thursday by County Court of Common Pleas Judge David Bortner to 5½-11 years imprisonment for assaulting an East Whiteland Township Police Officer with his car in 2021 after fleeing a police stop in West Goshen Township.
According to Chester County District Attorney Deb Ryan, on June 8, 2022, Johnson pleaded guilty to aggravated assault against a law enforcement officer and fleeing and eluding police.
In connection with the guilty plea, the court was advised that on April 18, 2021, the defendant was pulled over by a West Goshen Police Officer but immediately fled at a high rate of speed. A short time later, the defendant’s car was seen getting gas at a Wawa on Lancaster Avenue in East Whiteland. An East Whiteland Officer blocked the front of the car and began talking with the defendant. The defendant suddenly accelerated in reverse, trapping the Officer between the driver and the driver’s door, forcing him to hold onto the car to avoid being run over. The defendant continued to accelerate as the officer clung to the car. The Officer eventually jumped from the vehicle, which caused him to strike his head on the pavement.
The case was investigated by the East Whiteland Township and West Goshen Township Police Departments. Chief Deputy District Attorney Michelle Frei prosecuted the case.
