Man Charged with DUI Assault After Striking Pedestrian and Causing Multiple Collisions

Arrest

COATESVILLE, PA — The City of Coatesville  Police Department announced the arrest of a 23-year-old man following the investigation of a pedestrian struck by vehicle incident.

Joseph W. Long of Coatesville has been charged with Aggravated Assault by Vehicle While DUI, Driving Under the Influence, Simple Assault, Recklessly Endangering Another Person, and other related offenses.

The criminal complaint alleges that on August 3, 2023, at approximately 7:28 PM, officers were dispatched to the 100 block of Hope Avenue for the report of a pedestrian struck by a vehicle. The responding officer discovered the victim with serious injuries to his arm and leg. The victim was then transported to Paoli Hospital via ambulance.

The subsequent investigation revealed that Joseph W. Long was operating a 2011 Chevrolet Traverse at the time of the collision. Long reportedly accelerated northbound on Hope Avenue at a high rate of speed and struck the victim. The impact sent the victim into the air and over top of the vehicle before landing back on the pavement. Long then turned right onto Charles Street, and struck a parked vehicle, pushing it into a second parked vehicle.

The responding officer interviewed several witnesses and reviewed bystander cellphone video footage that captured the occurrence. Long was taken into custody on the scene without incident.

Long has been arranged on all charges and has been remanded to Chester County Prison in lieu of $100,000.00 cash-only bail.

Information, a criminal complaint, or an arrest is not a declaration of guilt. A suspect, arrestee, or defendant is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
