Kennett Square Police Investigating Magnolia Place Donation and Fundraising Fraud

Kennett Square Police Department

KENNETT SQUARE, PA — On January 25, 2021, there was a fire and explosion event that occurred in the Victory Brewing Company Brew Pub and Magnolia Place Apartment building located at 650 West Cypress Street, Kennett Square Borough.  On February 4, 2021, the Kennett Square Police Department state they became aware of a possible theft by deception scheme that centered around a fundraising effort as it related to an employee of the YMCA.

Authorities state that, after an initial investigation, it became apparent that an employee of the YMCA, who teaches classes at nearly every branch in the Greater Brandywine Association of YMCAs, had led their employer, friends, and YMCA members to believe that they had been displaced by the fire and were living in a hotel with their children as a result of the incident.

A fundraising effort was organized by the YMCA and by friends of the individual on their behalf. There was an overwhelming response to the donation solicitation. The Kennett Square Police Department is attempting to catalog and organize information related to those that donated.  Investigation has determined that members of the YMCA may have also been directly solicited by the instructor.

If you feel that you were wrongly solicited by this individual and/or if you provided funds, goods, or gift cards to them under false pretenses, the Kennett Square Police Department is requesting you report that information directly to us by clicking here and completing this form which will be submitted to this investigating officer, Corporal Christopher Gravina.  Additionally, if victims can contact Cpl. Gravina directly via email at [email protected].
