WEST CHESTER, PA — Judge David Bortner recently sentenced 29-year-old Ricardo Rivera of Reading, Berks County to life in prison for the shooting death of 17-year-old David “Davy Mike” Doyle III during a robbery in 2017, announced Chester County District Attorney Deb Ryan. In April 2022, a jury found the defendant guilty of second-degree murder, robbery, burglary, and related offenses.

During the sentencing, the court was advised that on September 24, 2017, North Coventry Police found the victim with a gunshot wound to the stomach at a residence on Worth Blvd. in Pottstown. He was transported to Reading Hospital, where he died the next day.

North Coventry Police and Chester County Detectives determined the defendant and three other co-defendants executed a home-invasion robbery for drugs and money when the murder happened. A co-defendant entered the residence under the pretext of buying drugs, then let the defendant and another co-defendant – both of whom were wearing masks – inside. The defendant was carrying a semi-automatic pistol.

The victim and five other people were inside the home, including three children under the age of 10. The victim struggled with the defendant in an attempt to protect the children. During the struggle, the defendant fired two shots, one of which hit the victim in the torso.

“Davy Mike died a hero trying to protect the children around him,” said Ryan. “With Ricardo Rivera now behind bars for the rest of his life, I hope Davy Mike’s family finds some peace. This is such a tragic case.”

Jonathan Malave, a co-defendant who drove the getaway car, pled guilty in October 2021 and was sentenced to 17-34 years in prison. One other co-defendant is awaiting trial.
