Shusterman Announces $1 Million Grant Awarded to Schuylkill Township for Sidewalk Installation

SCHUYLKILL, PA — State Rep. Melissa Shusterman announced that Schuylkill Township will receive $1 million from the Multimodal Transportation Fund to construct a sidewalk along Valley Forge Road.

The Multimodal Transportation Fund provides grants to encourage economic development and ensure that a safe and reliable system of transportation is available to the residents of the commonwealth.

Currently, sections of Valley Forge Road do not have any sidewalks. Shusterman noted that this is problematic because several SEPTA bus stops are located along this heavily traveled roadway. To increase pedestrian safety, Schuylkill Township plans to install sidewalks along state Route 23 from White Horse Road to Valley Road in Phoenixville. The project will consist of installing 2,200 linear feet of ADA sidewalks and ramps, as well as drainage improvements.

“I’m thankful that Schuylkill was selected to receive this million-dollar grant, especially because it will benefit everybody in our community,” Shusterman said. “These funds will increase pedestrian safety, as well as decrease mobility issues for Chester County residents living with a disability by providing easier access to public transportation.”

“This is very exciting news for Schuylkill Township as this grant will help provide much needed safety and connectivity improvements for our residents and neighboring communities,” Township Manager E.J. Mentry said. “The sidewalk project has been several years in the making and the Board of Supervisors is extremely pleased to be awarded the funding to make this vision a reality.”

The total cost for this project is $1.11 million.
