U.S. Senator Bob Casey (D-PA) has voiced concerns over the payroll disruption that affected more than 50,000 rural mail carriers across the country, including thousands in Pennsylvania. The issue began with a September 1 payroll error, which resulted in missed or incomplete paychecks for numerous postal workers.
Despite assurances from the United States Postal Service (USPS) that the problem has been resolved, Senator Casey has received reports from Pennsylvanians indicating that they continue to face issues with their pay, including incomplete, erroneous, or delayed wages.
In a recent letter to USPS Postmaster General Louis DeJoy, Senator Casey highlighted the crucial role of rural mail carriers, particularly during the COVID-19 pandemic. “Through the COVID-19 pandemic, letter carriers continued to deliver critical medications, allowed voters to safely cast their ballots, and helped us stay connected during a time of isolation,” he wrote. “They should be able to rely on the Postal Service to provide fair and timely compensation for their work.”
This is not the first time Senator Casey has challenged the USPS under Postmaster General DeJoy’s leadership. In September 2020, he conducted an investigation into significant delays in mailing prescriptions during the pandemic. His efforts led to an audit of a Lehigh Valley facility in 2021 after being denied entry months prior.
In 2022, Senator Casey worked to pass the Postal Service Reform Act, a bipartisan legislation aimed at improving the accountability, transparency, and sustainability of the USPS. He also addressed systemic mail delivery problems in Pennsylvania, particularly in Philadelphia and Luzerne County.
Senator Casey’s recent letter to the Postmaster General calls for answers regarding the payroll disruptions and requests a comprehensive plan to prevent such incidents in the future. He has asked whether all affected letter carriers have received full compensation and whether system level changes have been implemented to address any underlying issues. The Senator’s proactive approach emphasizes his commitment to ensuring fair compensation for rural mail carriers and improving the USPS’s overall service quality.
