Wilmington Honored with GFOA Award of Financial Reporting Achievement

GFOA Award

WILMINGTON, DE — Wilmington Mayor Mike Purzycki and the Director of Finance, J. Brett Taylor, recently announced that the Government Finance Officers Association (GFOA) has honored Wilmington with its Award of Financial Reporting Achievement for the City’s Fiscal Year 2021 Financial Statements.

According to GFOA, this award is presented to the department or individual designated as instrumental in the government’s earning a Certificate of Achievement for Excellence in Financial Reporting. A Certificate of Achievement is presented to those governments whose annual financial reports are judged to adhere to program standards and represent the highest award in government financial reporting. More than 4,300 governments receive such certificates each year from GFOA.

This award, which pertains to the Annual Comprehensive Financial Report for the Fiscal Year ended June 30, 2021, represents the 32nd consecutive year the City has received the highest form of recognition for financial reporting. To receive the award, the City’s report had to satisfy certain eligibility requirements, which can be viewed online here. Reports submitted to the Certificate of Achievement for Excellence in Financial Reporting Program (COA) are reviewed by selected members of the GFOA professional staff and the GFOA Special Review Committee (SRC), which comprises individuals with expertise in public sector financial reporting and includes financial statement preparers, independent auditors, academics, and other finance professionals.

“The Department of Finance develops it Annual Comprehensive Financial Report to inform citizens, employees, and bond investors on the City’s financial condition and internal controls to ensure transparency and accounting integrity,” said Finance Director Taylor.  “We are pleased that our financial statements meet the high quality required to attain a GFOA Certificate.”
