Tragic Hit-and-Run: Unidentified Tractor-Trailer Collides with Pedestrian on I-95

NEW CASTLE, DE — The Delaware State Police are investigating a fatal pedestrian hit-and-run collision that occurred early Thursday morning in New Castle that left one man dead.

According to investigators, on September 28, 2023, at approximately 2:02 a.m., an unknown tractor-trailer was traveling in the right center lane of I-95 northbound in the area of State Route 141.  At the same time, a pedestrian wearing dark clothing ran across the northbound lanes of I-95 from the DelDOT sandbox in the median towards Airport Road. The pedestrian was struck by the tractor-trailer and came to rest in the right center lane of I-95 northbound. The tractor-trailer did not stop and the driver fled from the scene of the collision.

The pedestrian, a 59-year-old man from Wilmington, Delaware, was pronounced dead at the scene. His name is being withheld until his family and relatives are notified.

The intersection was closed for approximately three hours while the scene was investigated and the roadway was cleared.

The Delaware State Police Troop 2 Collision Reconstruction Unit continues to investigate this incident. Troopers are asking anyone who witnessed this collision to please contact Sergeant J.
