Tragic Dawn Crash in Newark Claims Life of Elderly Woman, Teenager Injured

NEWARK, DE — A 73-year-old woman tragically lost her life in a horrific crash in Newark, Delaware early Friday morning. The accident involved two vehicles and occurred at the intersection of E. Chestnut Hill Road (State Route 4) and Augusta Drive.

The fatal incident unfolded shortly after dawn on February 16, 2024, around 5:34 a.m. The elderly woman, whose identity has not yet been revealed pending family notification, was driving a red 2019 Kia Forte westbound in the left turn lane on E. Chestnut Hill Road.

As she attempted to turn left towards Augusta Square Shopping Center, her vehicle came into the path of a silver 2014 Chevrolet Equinox. The Chevrolet, driven by an 18-year-old male from Newark, was traveling eastbound in the right-thru lane on E. Chestnut Hill Road.

The front of the Chevrolet collided with the right side of the Kia in the intersection, resulting in a catastrophic impact. The elderly woman was rushed to a local hospital, where she later succumbed to her injuries.

The teenager driving the Chevrolet was also transported to an area hospital. He suffered non-life-threatening injuries and is expected to make a full recovery.

The collision led to a closure of the roadway for about four hours as investigators worked to piece together the circumstances leading up to the crash.

The Delaware State Police Troop 2 Collision Reconstruction Unit has taken over the investigation into this tragic incident. They are urging any witnesses to the crash to come forward.
