CLAYMONT, DE — Delaware State Police announced the arrest of a 15-year-old teenager for stealing a motor vehicle at Wawa on Tuesday evening.

According to the criminal complaint, on March 21, 2023, at approximately 9:20 p.m., troopers responded to Wawa, located at 2621 Philadelphia Pike in Claymont, for a stolen motor vehicle complaint. The operator of an Acura ILX left the vehicle unlocked while they shopped inside the convenience store. When they returned to the parking lot, the Acura was gone.

At approximately 11:20 p.m., the Delaware River & Bay Authority (DRBA) was dispatched to a report of a disabled vehicle on I-295 near the I-495 exit. As DRBA officers arrived, they observed a group of teenagers in the area of the Acura. They discovered that the vehicle was stolen from within the jurisdiction of the Delaware State Police and subsequently detained the teenagers. Troopers responded to the scene and assumed the investigation. Through investigative efforts, it was learned that one of the five teenagers stole the Acura and then picked up their friends. The investigation further revealed that the 15-year-old acted alone.

The 15-year-old suspect was transported to Troop 2 and charged with theft of a motor vehicle (Felony). They were arraigned by the Justice of the Peace Court # 11, released to a guardian, and given a date to appear in Family Court.
