UPPER MERION TOWNSHIP, PA — The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) has announced an emergency closure of U.S. 202 (Dekalb Pike) in both directions between Saulin Boulevard and Henderson Road in Upper Merion Township, Montgomery County. The closure comes as a response to a newly discovered sinkhole beneath the southbound travel lanes.
Southbound U.S. 202 was closed shortly after 7:00 PM yesterday due to the sinkhole. Northbound U.S. 202 between Henderson Road and Saulin Boulevard is also closed for additional sinkhole repair work. This northbound section has been shut down since the early morning of Thursday, December 14, after another sinkhole was found in the right travel lane, just north of Henderson Road.
During the period of these closures, motorists are advised to use alternate routes including Henderson Road and Saulin Boulevard. PennDOT has ensured that local access will be maintained for all residents and businesses in the area.
The timeframe for reopening U.S. 202 is currently uncertain. PennDOT engineers are working diligently to assess the extent of the new damage and develop a comprehensive repair plan to ensure the safe reopening of the highway. Motorists are urged to exercise caution and patience during this period while PennDOT works to resolve the issue.
