PHILADELPHIA, PA — The Greater Philadelphia Diaper Bank has announced monthly distribution dates from its warehouse in Philadelphia, starting in January.

Distribution is slated to begin on January 18, 2023, and will occur on the third Wednesday of each month. The GPDB warehouse is located at MaKen North on 3525 I Street in the Kensington neighborhood. Distribution will take place around the corner on Venango Street from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.

This undertaking marks the first time the GPDB directly distributes diapers on a regular basis. The GPDB currently partners with over 50 community organizations in and around Philadelphia, who then distribute diapers, period products and adult incontinence products free of charge. The addition of a distribution site in Kensington expands the GPDB’s reach into almost every neighborhood in Philadelphia.

“We want to serve Kensington because we are right here in the neighborhood,” says Operations Manager Deneen Newland. “Holding a distribution day every month means that we can get diapers and other basic needs into the hands of our neighbors who need them most.”

Diaper banks became particularly important during the pandemic as supply chain issues and rising costs strained families who struggle to meet basic needs. According to a national survey by Huggies and the National Diaper Bank Network, one in three families struggles to afford diapers. The GPDB helps Philadelphia families fill a gap that programs such as EBT and WIC do not cover.

“A baby needs up to 12 diapers each day to stay healthy,” Newland adds. “A price tag of $80 per month for diapers is more than a lot of families can afford.”

The GPDB launched in 2012 and in April 2022 became a program of Mighty Writers, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit. The mission of the GPDB is to ensure that every family member is clean, dry and healthy so that they can learn and live with dignity.

“We are honored to be able to serve our communities by providing diapers to families in need,” says Tim Whitaker, executive director of Mighty Writers. “It fits perfectly with our overall philosophy — to provide assistance where we can so that kids and families can think clearly and write with clarity.”
