JENKINTOWN, PA — In an innovative attempt to boost dog adoptions, the Pennsylvania Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (PSPCA) is moving its Sunday adoption program off-site. The first such event will be held at PetSmart in Jenkintown on Sunday, October 29, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.
This strategic move aims to reach prospective pet owners in communities outside of Philadelphia, where the PSPCA’s headquarters is located. With dog adoptions decreasing nationwide, this initiative aims to facilitate the process for families seeking to adopt a canine companion. Approximately 3-5 dogs will be present at the event, each eager to find their forever home.
“Dog adoptions have decreased not only at our shelter, but at shelters across the country,” said Maddie Bernstein, Director of Lifesaving at the PSPCA. “It is clear that we have to be creative and pivot to help these beautiful souls find the families they so greatly deserve.”
PetSmart in Jenkintown, located at 901 Old York Road, has graciously agreed to host the event. The store holds a kennel license, allowing for immediate adoption right from the facility. This partnership also provides the benefit of families being able to purchase all necessary supplies for their new pet on the spot.
The PSPCA assures that all standard adoption processes and policies will be in place during the off-site event.
The PSPCA is a non-profit organization that has been dedicated to preventing animal cruelty and rescuing animals from abuse and neglect since 1867. It offers several lifesaving programs for animals, including a low-cost veterinary clinic, spay and neuter services, and pet adoption facilities.
The forthcoming event represents a significant step by the PSPCA towards increasing dog adoptions in Montgomery County and surrounding areas. Residents are encouraged to attend and potentially meet their new furry family member.
