PHILADELPHIA, PA — The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) has announced that construction will persist next week on the U.S. 1 (Roosevelt Expressway). The work is part of a $97.1 million project to rehabilitate the Wayne Junction Viaduct, which stretches over the SEPTA tracks and the Nicetown neighborhood in Philadelphia.

From Monday, December 18, to Friday, December 22, motorists should anticipate periodic lane closures on both directions of the Roosevelt Expressway. The southbound lanes between 9th Street and Interstate 76 will be impacted from 6:00 PM to 5:30 AM the following morning, while the northbound lanes between I-76 and 9th Street will see closures from 7:00 PM to 5:30 AM the next day.

Motorists are advised to allow for extra time when traveling through these areas, as backups and delays are expected. PennDOT has also noted that all scheduled activities are subject to changes depending on weather conditions.

The ongoing work is part of the post-construction punch-list activities for PennDOT’s substantially completed Wayne Junction Viaduct project. The aim of this project is to improve the structural integrity and extend the service life of the viaduct, while enhancing travel safety for motorists.
