PennDOT Announces Tree Clearing Operations on Route 73

Traffic, lane closed

CHELTENHAM TWP, PA — The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) announced that tree clearing operations will begin next week as part of a project to improve traffic flow and safety on Route 73 (Church Road) at the intersections with Greenwood Avenue and Rices Mill Road in Cheltenham Township, Montgomery County.

Lane closure with flagging on Greenwood Avenue at the Route 73 (Church Road) intersection will be in effect from Monday, August 12, to Friday, August 16, between 9:00 AM and 3:00 PM. Drivers should expect significant traffic backups and delays during these times.

PennDOT advises motorists to allow extra travel time when passing through the work area. All scheduled activities are weather dependent.

The project includes adding turn lanes at the intersections of Route 73 (Church Road) and Greenwood Avenue. Left turn lanes will be added to Route 73 (Church Road), and a northbound right turn lane will be added to Greenwood Avenue. Traffic signals on Route 73 (Church Road) at Greenwood Avenue and Rices Mill Road will be interconnected. The project also aims to improve drainage in the area and install a new stormwater management system. Additionally, the sidewalk along the north side of Route 73 (Church Road) will be extended from Rices Mill Road to Greenwood Avenue.

Environmental efforts related to the Curtis Arboretum will include the removal and planting of trees, repurposing salvaged wood, reconstructing stone walls, and re-vegetating disturbed areas.

Allan Myers, LP of Worcester, Pennsylvania, is the general contractor for the $10,824,555 project, which is fully funded by federal resources. Construction is expected to be completed by fall 2027.
