PennDOT Announces Lane Restrictions for Route 222/Route 30 Interchange Improvement Project

Travel Restrictions

MAHHIEM TOWNSHIP, PA — The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) has alerted motorists to upcoming lane restrictions this Wednesday night on Route 222 at the Route 222/Route 30 Interchange Improvement Project in Manheim Township, Lancaster County.

Around 2,000 feet of temporary barrier will be removed in both directions of Route 222 just north of the Route 30 interchange, provided the weather conditions permit. This work is scheduled to take place from 9:00 PM Wednesday, November 8, to 6:00 AM Thursday, November 9. Consequently, the right lane of northbound and southbound Route 222 will be closed during this period. Motorists are advised to remain alert and exercise caution while passing through the work zone.

In addition to this, eastbound Route 30 has been reduced from three lanes to two lanes from the Oregon Pike (Route 272) underpass to the Route 222 overpass. The right lane of eastbound Route 30 is closed, and the Chester Road on-ramp to eastbound Route 30 has been shifted to the closed eastbound Route 30 right lane.

This long-term traffic shift is anticipated to last several months, possibly causing delays particularly during peak traffic hours. Motorists are advised to stay alert and plan their travel accordingly.

The improvement project at the Route 222/Route 30 Interchange includes reconstructing Route 222 from the interchange north approximately one mile near Stoner Park, which is situated just south of the Landis Valley Road bridge spanning the highway.

On the north side of the interchange, a second lane will be constructed on the southbound Route 222 ramp to westbound Route 30 that will connect to the existing northbound Route 272 (Oregon Pike) exit ramp. A third lane will be added from the westbound Route 30 ramp to northbound Route 222 while extending this lane to the existing westbound Route 30 third lane approaching Oregon Pike (Route 272).

On the south side of the interchange, a second ramp lane from eastbound Route 30 to northbound Route 222 will be constructed. This new ramp lane will connect to the existing Route 30 travel lane (right lane), providing drivers using the right lane of eastbound Route 30 the option to either continue east or exit to northbound Route 222.

Route 222 will be converted from four lanes to six lanes from the interchange to the north end of the project limits.

The project also entails replacing the two bridges carrying Route 222 ramps over Route 30, with the northbound Route 222 bridge being widened to two lanes. The Eden Road bridge spanning Route 222 north of the interchange will remain in place, but Route 222 under the bridge will be lowered to increase clearance under the bridge.

Throughout the life of the project, four lanes of traffic will be maintained, and motorists are urged to drive with caution through the work zone.

JD Eckman, Inc., of Atglen, PA, is the contractor handling this $72,173,900 project, which is expected to be completed by September 3, 2027.
