PHILADELPHIA, PA — The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) has announced that the final stages of the Wayne Junction Viaduct rehabilitation project will necessitate temporary lane closures on U.S. 1 (Roosevelt Expressway). The closures, which are necessary for overhead sign installation, will be in place next week and affect both northbound and southbound traffic.
Motorists should anticipate periodic single lane closures on southbound U.S. 1 between 9th Street and Fox Street from 6:00 PM to 5:30 AM, starting Monday, March 11, through Thursday, March 14. Similarly, those traveling northbound on U.S. 1 can expect lane closures between Fox Street and 9th Street from 7:00 PM to 5:30 AM over the same period.
These closures are part of the final steps, or so-called “punch list” activities, to complete the rehabilitation of the Wayne Junction Viaduct, a critical piece of infrastructure that carries U.S. 1 over SEPTA tracks and the Nicetown neighborhood of Philadelphia.
This project is not just about rehabilitation; it’s also about safety and connectivity. The Wayne Junction Viaduct is a crucial artery for Philadelphia, and its renovation ensures the safe and efficient movement of people and goods across the city. The installation of new overhead signs will provide clear guidance to motorists, improving navigation and reducing the risk of accidents.
PennDOT is urging motorists to exercise caution when driving through work zones, not only for their safety but for the safety of the workers as well. As always, the schedule is weather-dependent and subject to change.
