PECO Receives National Recognition for Emergency Restoration Efforts After Hurricane Ida

PHILADELPHIA, PA — The Edison Electric Institute (EEI) recognized PECO with an Emergency Response Award for its work to quickly and safely restore power to homes and businesses following Hurricane Ida last September. EEI represents all U.S. investor-owned electric companies, and its members provide electricity for more than 220 million Americans.

Presented to EEI member companies, the Emergency Response Awards recognize recovery and assistance efforts of electric companies following service disruptions caused by extreme weather or other natural events. The winners were chosen by a panel of judges following an international nomination process, and the awards were presented during EEI’s virtual winter Board of Directors meeting. PECO was recognized by EEI along with its Exelon sister utility, ComEd.

“We are honored to be recognized by EEI for our work to restore customers affected by Hurricane Ida,” said John McDonald, PECO senior vice president and COO. “We have seen more frequent and extreme weather events impacting both our electric and natural gas systems. This award honors our employees who work around the clock to support our customers and communities, both during storm events and as we work to harden our system to mitigate this type of damage in the future.”

Hurricane Ida brought widespread devastation to southeastern Pennsylvania. High winds and tornadoes downed trees, which damaged power lines and other electrical equipment. In addition, Prolonged heavy rain caused significant and, in some cases, historic flooding across the region, which additionally impacted more than 2,000 natural gas customers. The flooding also impacted several substations, which created a challenging environment to bring these high-voltage facilities back online.

PECO’s more than 2,900 PECO employees in the field and back office were engaged in restoration efforts during the storms. Additional contractors and mutual assistance personnel were also called in to support storm restoration efforts. Thanks to their relentless efforts, 94 percent of the 165,000 impacted customers were restored within 48 hours, despite the challenging circumstances.

To combat the effects of a changing climate and more frequent and severe storms, PECO is investing millions of dollars on storm hardening through its Reliability & Resiliency Plan, which involves physical changes to make equipment less vulnerable to the impact of extreme weather conditions.
