Nighttime Traffic Shifts on Schuylkill Expressway Begin Next Week, Delays Expected

Traffic Alert

PHILADELPHIA, PA — Next week, Philadelphia commuters can expect overnight traffic shifts on the Interstate 76 (Schuylkill Expressway). The changes are part of a $36.8 million project by the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) to resurface and repair nearly five miles of the expressway, including associated ramps and 23 bridges.

Starting Monday, March 11, through Wednesday, March 13, a lane closure will be in place on both eastbound and westbound I-76 between the I-676 and Montgomery Drive interchanges from 9:00 PM to 5:00 AM. Motorists should anticipate backups and delays during these hours and allow extra time for travel.

This extensive contract includes milling and overlaying pavement from U.S. 1 South (City Avenue) to Interstate 676 (Vine Street Expressway), performing necessary concrete base, shoulder, and barrier repairs and replacements, and making minor grade adjustments for existing inlets at select locations.

Additional improvements include replacing damaged signs, installing new pavement markings, delineators, and rumble strips, and carrying out bridge repairs. All these enhancements aim to improve safety and extend the lifespan of the interstate.

H&K Group, Inc. of Skippack, PA, is the general contractor for this project, which is financed entirely with federal funds. The physical construction on the project is expected to wrap up in late 2024.

As always, all scheduled activities are weather dependent. Motorists are advised to exercise patience and caution when navigating through these work zones.
