Nighttime Lane Closures on I-476 for Stormwater Management to Cause Delays

Traffic Alert

SOUTHEASTERN PENNSYLVANIA — The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) announced that nighttime stormwater management activities will disrupt traffic on Interstate 476 next week. This work is part of a $10.4 million project to install and integrate Variable Speed Limit (VSL) and Queue Warning (QW) systems aimed at managing congestion and enhancing traffic safety on approximately 14.5 miles of the interstate in Delaware and Montgomery counties.

On Thursday, June 20, and Friday, June 21, from 9:00 PM to 5:00 AM the following morning, periodic lane closures will occur on sections of northbound or southbound I-476 between the I-95 and I-76 interchanges. Motorists are advised to allow extra time when traveling through these areas, as backups and delays may occur. All scheduled activities are weather dependent.

Under this project, PennDOT will construct the necessary Intelligent Transportation System (ITS) conduits, queue detectors, variable speed limit signage, dynamic message signs, and the technological systems necessary to operate the system from PennDOT’s new Regional Transportation Management Center (RTMC).

The VSL systems will display speed limits that can change based on real-time expressway, traffic, and weather conditions to improve traffic flow and safety by warning.
