Newark Woman and Wilmington Man Arrested for Assaulting Officers in New Castle

NEW CASTLE, DE — Last Saturday evening, Delaware State Police arrested a 22-year-old woman from Newark, Delaware, and 31-year-old James Wright of Wilmington, Delaware, on charges of felony assault and resisting arrest. The incident occurred at the Best Night Inn located at 1200 West Avenue, New Castle.

The police responded to a report of a physical domestic dispute at approximately 9:00 p.m. on December 2, 2023. Upon arrival, a trooper spoke to a 22-year-old woman who alleged that her boyfriend, James Wright, had physically assaulted her outside their motel room. While the officer was speaking with the woman, Wright allegedly approached them repeatedly, making statements about fighting the trooper.

When the officer attempted to detain Wright, who reportedly did not comply with multiple verbal commands, a physical struggle ensued. Wright is accused of punching the trooper in the face numerous times and damaging his uniform shirt. In the midst of the struggle, the woman allegedly began hitting the trooper with her closed fists.

Officers from the Delaware River and Bay Authority (DRBA) arrived at the scene to assist in detaining Wright. During the ongoing struggle, both Wright and the woman allegedly hit multiple DRBA officers, causing injuries. Both individuals were ultimately taken into custody and transported to Troop 2, where they were charged with multiple offenses.

To protect the victim of the alleged domestic violence, the name of the 22-year-old woman is being withheld. She has been charged with Assault 2nd Injure a Law Enforcement Officer, Resisting Arrest with Force, and Disorderly Conduct. She was arraigned by Justice of the Peace Court 11 and released on a $1,500 unsecured bond.

James Wright faces charges of Assault 2nd Injure a Law Enforcement Officer, Resisting Arrest with Force, Offensive Touching of Law Enforcement Officer, Offensive Touching, Criminal Mischief, and Disorderly Conduct. He was arraigned by Justice of the Peace Court 11 and released on a $12,000 unsecured bond.
