NEWARK, DE — On the morning of February 14, 2024, Newark Police were called to an apartment on the 700 block of Adams Drive following a late report of a shooting. The resident of the apartment had reported hearing a gunshot early that morning and later discovered damage to the ceiling and a bullet fragment on the floor.

Further investigation led police to the apartment directly above, where they executed a search warrant. Detectives discovered a handgun and a bullet entry point in the floor of this apartment. It was determined that the firearm had been discharged accidentally by the resident of the upper apartment.

At the time of the alleged shooting, two people were in the apartment below, neither of whom suffered any injuries.

The resident of the upper apartment, identified as 29-year-old Tyler Wade of Newark, was taken into custody without incident. Wade was subsequently charged with two counts of Reckless Endangering First Degree. After appearing before Justice of the Peace Court #11 via video, Wade was released after posting $12,000 secured bail.

As proceedings continue, it’s important to remember that these are allegations and the defendant is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.

This case spotlights the potential risks associated with firearms, even when they are not used with malicious intent. Gun safety is paramount for anyone who owns or handles firearms. Here are some fundamental practices:

  6. Regularly maintain and clean your firearm to ensure it’s in safe working order.
  7. Use the correct ammunition for your gun.
  8. Wear protective gear, like safety glasses and ear protection, when shooting.
