JENKINTOWN, PANational Philanthropic Trust (NPT) announced it granted $6.06 billion on behalf of its donors in 2022, representing an increase of 18% in dollars granted compared to 2021 and an increase of 263% compared to pre-pandemic giving in 2019.

NPT supported more than 35,000 unique charities with over 104,000 grants in 2022, both surpassing previous historic benchmarks. Grantees spanned all 50 states and the District of Columbia. More than 180 internationally based, unique charitable organizations in over 50 countries also received NPT grants.

“With our donors recommending 18% more in grant dollars in 2022, they are demonstrating that DAF donors are a stabilizing force when markets fluctuate and inflation is impacting all our budgets and buying power,” said Eileen Heisman, President and CEO of National Philanthropic Trust. “Nonprofit organizations are particularly vulnerable to inflation because they cannot react nimbly to rising prices. In times like these, charitable organizations rely on grants to address budget gaps. We observed that NPT donors responded quickly to domestic and global crises. NPT donors’ generosity has continued, and grant recommendations have increased in both value and volume, each year for more than a decade.”

Continued Heisman, “By funding their DAFs when markets were trending upward, donors were able to continue to support the charities that mean the most to them during a subsequent market downturn. They also identified new issues and causes to support. This generosity is extending into 2023. More than ever, I have seen NPT donors integrating trust-based practices into their giving. This gives charities the flexibility to direct donations where the funding is needed most.”

“DAF funding plays an essential role in our organization’s operations,” said Jane Golden, executive director of Mural Arts Philadelphia. “We would not have gotten where we are today without the support of DAF donors. Mural Arts has seen first-hand the passion of DAF donors. They have helped us move the needle on critical civic and social issues our communities are grappling with. DAF donors are helping us create real social change in an observably impactful way.”

A New Jersey-based charity agrees NPT DAF donors are engaged philanthropists.

“Our DAF donors are active problem solvers,” said Chip Paillex, founder and CEO of America’s Grow-a-Row (AGAR). “Our organization is not the solution to hunger, rather we are part of the solution. DAF donors have demonstrated they want to be part of the solution as well. Their intent is purposeful. During COVID, so many folks with DAFs came to us and gave heavily and put their trust in the AGAR team with unrestricted grants to leverage the funding where it was needed most.”

NPT affiliates, NPT UK and NPT Transatlantic, saw increases in value and volume of grantmaking in 2022.
