NORRISTOWN, PA — The Montgomery County Commissioners have announced the recent appointment of Sarah A. Charles as the County’s new Director of External Affairs.
Chair of the Montgomery County Board of Commissioners, Jamila H. Winder, emphasized the importance of this role in today’s challenging environment. “It’s more important than ever for the County to cultivate strong relationships with our government and community partners,” she said. “Sarah, with her extensive background in government affairs and deep roots in Montgomery County, is well-positioned to identify opportunities for us to partner with our key stakeholders across all 62 municipalities.”
Charles brings a wealth of experience to her new role. She has worked extensively with Montgomery County officials in the state Senate, where she led efforts with stakeholders and activists to pass the state’s first anti-human trafficking legislation. Her time at the Borough of Conshohocken, where she handled communications and special projects, further honed her understanding of the immense responsibilities local governments bear daily.
Before taking up her current post, Charles served as director of public engagement for Pennsylvania’s Office of Attorney General. There, she oversaw a statewide team of public servants dedicated to crime prevention, helping the department more than double the number of residents served across all 67 counties.
“I’m delighted to return to Montgomery County and work within the communities where I grew up,” said Charles. “I believe that government is about the improvement of people’s lives. To be able to foster and build strong relationships between the County and key stakeholders is a role I take seriously. I look forward to working with local, state, and federal partners to further our joint mission of serving Montgomery County residents well and to provide a direct link to county leadership.”
A Montgomery County native, Charles is an alumnus of Upper Merion High School. She holds a B.A. from Shippensburg University and an M.A. from American University in Washington, D.C. Currently, she serves on the Board of Directors for Shippensburg University’s Alumni Association. In November 2023, she was elected to the Lower Providence Board of Supervisors, where she now acts as board liaison to the Planning Commission.
With her extensive experience and local knowledge, Charles is expected to play a pivotal role in strengthening the county’s relationships with key stakeholders across all levels of government. This move could have significant implications for the county’s ability to effectively serve its residents and navigate complex challenges in the future.
In summary, Charles is a highly qualified and dedicated public servant who brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to the role of County Executive. With her strong leadership skills and commitment to serving her community, she is poised to make positive changes and drive progress in Montgomery County for years to come.
