PHILADELPHIA, PA — MidLantic Urology is hosting the third-annual Philadelphia ZERO Prostate Cancer Run/Walk on Sunday, September 26 at the Wilson Farm Park in Wayne. This year’s mission speaker is a prostate cancer survivor and former Philadelphia Mayor Michael Nutter.

Philadelphia is one of 28 communities across the nation participating in the ZERO Prostate Cancer Run/Walk 2021 series. The Run/Walk promotes awareness for prostate cancer, encouraging men to be informed about their risk, as well as raises funds for prostate cancer research.

“One in nine men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer during his lifetime, and that is why education, research and advocacy are critical,” said Lauryn Wagner, oncology nurse navigator at MidLantic Urology and the Philadelphia ZERO race director. “Over the course of the pandemic, millions of people missed out on key cancer screenings, which is why this year in particular it is really important for the community to come together to raise funds and awareness for this far to common disease.”

After revealing his recent several-year battle with prostate cancer and successful treatment at MidLantic Urology earlier this year, former Philadelphia Mayor Michael Nutter has become a champion for prostate cancer advocacy and will serve as the race’s mission speaker.

“I am so grateful to be a part of this race and have the opportunity to share my successful prostate cancer treatment at MidLantic Urology with the Philadelphia region, especially Black men in our area who are disproportionately impacted by this disease,” said Mayor Nutter. “Black men are 1.8 times more likely to be diagnosed with—and 2.2 times more likely to die from—prostate cancer than white men. Early detection could save your life, as it did mine, so please stay on top of your health and get checked.”

In addition to a 5k run and walk, the Philadelphia ZERO Prostate Cancer Run/Walk race day includes a celebration of prostate cancer survivors and caregivers, as well as those we’ve lost to the disease, and a special Kids Superhero Dash for Dad.

“This event is such a special day for those who have been affected by prostate cancer,” said Dr. Larry Belkoff, one of the MidLantic Urology urologic surgeons who treated Mayor Nutter. “Over the years, I have worked with countless men who have faced this disease, and I am proud to stand beside them to support their cancer journeys and celebrate their strength.”

Registration for the ZERO Prostate Cancer Run/Walk is free this year. Teams and individuals can continue to register and fundraise until the day of the event.
