LONDONDERRY TOWNSHIP, PA — Chester County residents, brace yourselves for a significant disruption in your daily commutes. The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) has announced a $6.3 million project to construct a roundabout at the intersection of Route 41 (Gap Newport Pike) and Route 926 (Street Road) in Londonderry Township.

Starting Monday, January 22, through Friday, January 26, Route 41 will see lane closures with flagging between Route 796 (Derry Meeting Road) and White Horse Road from 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM. This marks the beginning of a series of disruptions that will continue until late October 2024.

Moreover, drivers are reminded that Route 926 will be closed and detoured between Route 41 and Route 796 starting the week of January 22. Motorists are advised to use Route 41 and Route 796 during this closure.

Given these changes, motorists should anticipate backups and delays in the area. The importance of allowing extra time when traveling through or near the work areas cannot be overstated. Moreover, all scheduled activities are dependent on the weather, which, given the current forecast of snow in the coming week, might cause further delays.

The project involves constructing a single-lane, four-legged roundabout slightly south of the existing intersection to improve safety, increase mobility, and accommodate future traffic demands. The construction process will involve removing the existing pavement, reconstructing and resurfacing Route 41 for approximately 1,900 feet, and realigning Route 926 for approximately 1,400 feet.

In addition to these changes, the agricultural land to the west of the roundabout will be used for stormwater management, while the existing Route 41 east of the roundabout will be replaced with a wetland mitigation area. Other improvements include reconstructing roadway approaches, relocating driveway access, and installing roundabout lighting, signage, and pavement markings.

The project will be executed in two stages. During the first stage, Route 926 will be closed and detoured, with lane shifts occurring on Route 41. During the second stage, both Route 41 and Route 926 will be closed and detoured.

The general contractor for this project is J. D. Eckman, Inc. of Atglen, PA, and it is fully financed with federal funds.
