PHILADELPHIA, PA — In a heartfelt message to the youth of Philadelphia and their allies, Jeanette Bavwidinsi, Director of the Philadelphia Mayor’s Office of Youth Engagement, praised the resilience and determination they have demonstrated in the face of adversity.

Bavwidinsi acknowledged the challenging times that this young generation has faced, including navigating a global pandemic, adapting to virtual learning, experiencing momentous elections, witnessing social unrest, and dealing with significant issues such as mental health and gun violence. Yet through it all, she expressed her pride at their tenacity, noting, “And yet, we’re still here.”

The Director’s admiration for the city’s young leaders is palpable. She sees them as uniquely prepared for this moment in history, lauding their resilience and their willingness to act despite their fears and stand up for what is right.

She also credited the youth for teaching her about the true essence of public service: ensuring a more peaceful, equitable, and joyful society for future generations. This lesson, she noted, was straightforward yet profoundly impactful.

Bavwidinsi expressed gratitude for the collaborative efforts made by the youth in various initiatives, including voter registration drives and community conversations. She highlighted the success of opening City Hall’s doors to hundreds of young people from across the city, an effort aimed at bridging the gap between the youth, city leadership, and elected officials.

Bavwidinsi looks forward to the promise of 2024 with optimism and eagerness. She acknowledges the work that lies ahead but believes that collective efforts will lighten the load. She affirms her commitment to working alongside the youth in their communities, schools, places of worship, and wherever else they need support.
