Head-On Collision in Middletown Claims Life of 24-Year-Old Man

MIDDLETOWN, DE — Delaware State Police announced they are investigating a fatal motor vehicle collision that occurred in Middletown Wednesday evening.

Investigators with the Collision Reconstruction Unit say that on May 24, 2023, at approximately 8:18 p.m., a Jeep Grand Cherokee and a Mercury Grand Marquis were traveling on Warwick Road south of Middleneck Road. Both vehicles collided in a head-on collision near the solid double yellow lines. At this time, it is unknown which direction both vehicles were traveling before the collision and which vehicle crossed over the double yellow line into the oncoming lane.

The driver of the Jeep, a 57-year-old woman from Virginia Beach, Virginia, and the passenger, a 63-year-old woman from Virginia Beach, Virginia, were transported to the hospital for non-life-threatening injuries. The driver of the Mercury, a 24-year-old man from Townsend, Delaware, was transported to an area hospital for non-life-threatening injuries. The passenger of the Mercury, a 24-year-old man from Middletown, Delaware, was transported to an area hospital, where he died from his injuries. The identification of the victim is pending notification to his family.

The roadway was shut down for approximately 7 hours while the scene was investigated and cleared.
