PHILADELPHIA, PA — Harambee Institute of Science and Technology Charter School, in celebration of its 50th Anniversary, will welcome students, parents, and supporters to “Then & Now,” a panel discussion featuring three of the region’s African American college presidents, discussing their lives as middle school students, academic journeys, current responsibilities, and professional visions, on Wednesday, May 17 from 6 to 8 pm at The Pyramid Club, 1736 Market St, 52nd Floor.

Featured on the panel are: Dr. Brenda Allen of Lincoln University; Dr. Donald “Guy” Generals, Community College of Philadelphia, and President Aaron Walton of Cheyney University. The conversation will be moderated by Dr. James G. McPherson, III, MD, a leading Black cardiothoracic surgeon.

The Harambee Institute of Science and Technology Charter School (HISTCS), a K-8 charter school serving over 500 students residing in Philadelphia and the surrounding area, was established by the late John Skief in 1972 as one of Philadelphia’s first public charter schools and Pennsylvania’s first African-centered charter school. Proceeds from this event will underwrite Harambee’s annual bus tour to Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs), providing students with an opportunity to establish firsthand connections with institutions of higher learning that can continue to foster their academic excellence and cultural pride.
